It is suggested that the terms speech dis.ordered and non-speech disordered are more exact, and that viewing deviant speech structurally with no assumptions as to the thought behind it may prove valuable. Some psychiatrists characterize the population of schizophrenic s as being either thought disordered (TD) or non-thought disordered (NTD). Rochester and Martin (1979, pp. 4-6, 169) argue convincingly that the diagnosis of TD is circular since it depends upon the patient's speech.
