Abstract: This essay discusses extreme climatic events, the IPCC report, and varying opinions on global warming. If a crisis develops, institutional denial is likely to grow as the costs of remediation become too great to pay, so that expenditure on public relations material denying the greenhouse effect is likely to grow instead. The oil and coal industries, in particular, are retaining experts who dismiss all ideas of future climate change, and are adept at damping down alarm. This does not mean that the problems are not soluble, rather that the will is not there to solve them. The very companies that currently oppose remediation of global warming are those that have the skills to make the necessary changes.
