Title: The Control of Object Omission in Cantonese-speaking children with Specific Language Impairment
Abstract: This study investigates the acquisition of object omission in six Cantonese-speaking children with Specific Language Impairment (SLI). Results indicated that there was no significant difference in object omission between the SLI and language-matched typically developing (LM) children. Yet within group difference and two distinctive developmental patterns were identified for the SLI population. Furthermore, SLI children's control of object omission in different information situations was examined. Results revealed that SLI children had a similar distribution pattern of object omission to the LM children in new and old information situations. It was proposed that SLI children were sensitive to the social-pragmatic factors to the same extent as LM children. Potential implication of this sensitivity for language development and clinical intervention for SLI children was discussed.
