Abstract: Several methods of detection have been developed for signals with known frequency characteristics such as detection of chirp radar signals using matched filters. The work presented in this paper proposes an innovative method of detecting broadband dispersive signals where the known characteristic of exponential frequency decay forms the basis of detection. Computer simulations are performed on a known signal model with frequency content of 40 to 200 MHz . Effective detection is demonstrated even in the presence of background random noise or a sinusoidal noise burst with a signal to noise ratio (SNR) of -2 dB. Techniques are suggested for analog or digital implementation of the various process steps, with emphasis on radio frequency (RF) requirements.
