Abstract: The relationship between critical theory and linguistics goes back at least as far as the 1960s. During this time, language began to be seen as a central medium through which the world – including its hierarchies and relations of power – is constructed. This entry describes the history of critical approaches to language (or linguistic approaches to critical theory), key themes and debates in this area, and future directions.
