Title: FC 1-16 : Proactive maintenance therapy of adapalene-benzoyl peroxide fixed dose combination gel is not effective to prevent recurrence in patients with acne vulgaris
Abstract: Background: Proactive treatment for atopic dermatitis is widely used. But there had been no study about proactive maintenance therapy with adapalene-benzoyl peroxide (adapalene-BPO) combination gel for preventing the recurrence of mild to moderate acne vulgaris. Objectives: This study was aimed to evaluate the preventive effects with twice weekly application of adapalene-BPO combination gel after daily application of initial active treatment. Methods: A total of 27 patients applied adapalene-BPO combination gel once daily during initial 8 weeks. Then half of the patients (case group) applied adapalene-BPO combination gel twice a week during next 12 weeks, and the other half (control group) stopped applying. Skin assessments with number of inflammatory and noninflammatory lesions, Investigator`s Global Assessment (IGA) were conducted by the investigator for seven times from initiation of the study to 20 weeks later. Results: In both case and control groups, number of non-inflammatory lesion and IGA scores showed statistically significant decrease in 8 weeks of daily application. But in next 12 weeks, IGA scores worsened and there were no statistical difference at all of values measured between case and control group. Conclusion: Adapalene-BPO combination gel is effective treatment option for the acne vulgaris when applied once daily. But proactive acne treatment with twice a week application of combination gel is not effective.
