Abstract: Morality is the personal, communal or cultural view about right and wrong which determines human conduct. Ethics describes the various ways of examining and understanding the moral life. Medical ethics is a practical application of ethics or moral philosophy which addresses the rights and wrongs of different areas of health care practice and develops general moral guidance for use in biomedical fields. Principles are general guides that allow latitude for judgement in individual cases but provide a secure basis for the development of more detailed rules and policies. The development of a professional role requires the cultivation of worthy character traits to complement professional practice. The American Medical Association’s first code of ethics (1847) was based on the teaching of the British physician Thomas Percival whose doctrine of medical ethics (1803) accorded priority to the principles of beneficence and non-maleficence over or choices.
