Abstract: In this chapter three types of views of revelation are examined. Tradition-grounded views concentrate on forms of traditional revelation, classifying revelation by phenomenal medium (such as dreams or voices) or content (such as commands or divine remonstration) or whether it is foundational or not. Second, there are “embracive” views of revelation, which extend the boundaries of religious revelation to include what is not traditionally seen as revelation. The embracive views of Friedrich Schleiermacher and Bishop George Berkeley are considered, a third type of view is ontological. Three ontological views of revelation are identified: revelation is of religious reality, revelation is of human origin, and revelation has both a human and a divine element. Unmodified these three ontological views are mutually exclusive, but suitably modified, it is argued, they are compatible.
