Title: Pathophysiology of the Nerve Roots in the Lumbar Spine
Abstract: Spinal nerve roots are often mechanically deformed in connection with degenerative conditions of the spine, such as disc herniation and spinal stenosis, including segmental instability, and in association with spine trauma. Limited information is available regarding the reaction of spinal nerve roots to mechanical trauma, which is different from peripheral nerves for which the trauma effects have been explored in more detail. However, data from experiments on peripheral nerve compression cannot always be directly transferred to spinal nerve root compression because of certain anatomical and physiological differences between peripheral nerves and spinal nerve roots.
