Title: The EU’s Asia security policy and the US factor
Abstract: Historically, the United States (US) has played a leading role in Asian politics, backed by a substantial economic and military presence and a number of bilateral defence arrangements with individual Asian countries. In contrast, the European Union's (EU) role in Asia has been more mundane, based primarily on economic links and a considerable backing of the US' Asian policy. With important changes brought about by Trump's "America First" banner to international relations and regional politics, will the EU's Asia policy be strengthened or weakened by this new US position? The outcome depends on whether or not the EU can significantly upgrade its security and defence capacity, strengthen its relations with China, deepen relations with a wide number of Asian states, and maintain friendly relations with the US. Each of these undertakings presents challenges but also opportunities, and it will be the aim of this chapter to explore the EU's likely success in pursuing these goals.
