Title: The Impact of Emotional Intelligence on Job Satisfaction: Evidence from a Large Indian Bank
Abstract: IntroductionSalovey and Mayer (1990) were the first who defined Emotional Intelligence (EI) as ability to monitor one's own and others' feelings, to discriminate among them, and to use this information to guide one's thinking and action. Emotional intelligence incorporates the aspects of both emotions and intelligence. These twin inseparable qualities make a great impact on the people. A more proper description of emotional intelligence would be the aptitude to understand emotions and to augment thinking process. Emotional intelligence is the competence of an individual to recognize, apply, comprehend, and understand emotional behavior in an optimistic manner to ease the constant worry, converse healthy, have compassion towards peers and subordinates, triumph over challenges, and resolve conflict.Daniel Goleman, a modern-day guru in the field of emotional intelligence, has very clearly pointed out in his studies that emotional intelligence of leaders directly affects their success in the organization (Goleman, 1995; 1998; Cherniss and Goleman, 2001; and Goleman et al., 2000).Goleman (1995) has offered a benchmark model of emotional intelligence, which consists of four competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management. According to Mayer and Salovey (1997), emotional intelligence is the ability to understand the emotions of others along with the qualities to perceive and express the emotions.Emotional intelligence plays a crucial role in job satisfaction. Since there is immense competition due to globalization, a lot of importance is being given to job satisfaction. The multifaceted approach of an individual towards the job is referred to as job satisfaction. Job satisfaction has been extensively talked about among the practitioners and researchers. The general outlook or the perception an individual develops towards his job at the workplace is generally referred to as job satisfaction. According to DonaldoFeidler and Bond (2004), job satisfaction is the positive feeling that an individual has towards his job. Stephen and Ayaga (2014) explains the theory of job satisfaction as . .the overall feeling towards or attitude about the job that one performs.It can be summed up that emotional intelligence is the guiding force to succeed in an organization. It is also an essential element in leadership effectiveness. It influences the overall ability to manage the organizational demands that lead to stress and pressures. Emotional intelligence will surely have an important role to play in managing issues such as understanding the behavior of other employees, customers, etc., which are related to the employee behavior. Hence, a study on emotional intelligence of bank employees will be of great benefit and importance to the banks which will help them in designing various policies related to human resource management and development.Literature ReviewSingh (2007) emphasized that emotional intelligence has taken a very important place in the management field today. The concept of emotional intelligence is being appreciated as it influences and enhances the human resource of the organization. Emotional intelligence and the related capabilities are in popular demand these days as they are seemingly the game changers in the organization. In view of the fact that people are engaged in various tasks in an organization, emotional intelligence is the decisive factor for the efficient and influential management.Abdulazim et al. (2011) explored the influence of emotional quotient and gender on job fulfillment among the government employees in Egypt. The study concluded that both emotional quotient and gender determined work satisfaction among the employees.Ealias and George (2012) reported in their study that people with higher emotional quotient were more satisfied with their work and family life. Based on the results of the study, the researcher advised organizations to train employees for emotional intelligence which would help in bringing out the best from the employees while also establishing a positive relationship between the company and the aspirations of the employees. …
