Abstract: The Roberts Court: Year 1 Prof. Lori A. Ringhand* The 2005 term of the U.S. Supreme Court is of extraordinary interest to court observers. For the first time in 11 years, the Court’s term commenced without Chief Justice Rehnquist and ended without Associate Justice O’Connor. The departure of these two justices marked the end of one of the longest natural court periods (a period when there are no personnel changes on the court) in history. The departure of Justice O’Connor, long the ideological center of the Court, also marked a potential shift in the direction of the Court’s jurisprudence.
