Abstract: Computed tomography (CT) has proved to be a versatile tool for assessment of focal liver lesions and di¡use liver disease. Although less expensive imaging methods, such as sonography, are widely available, patients with equivocal ¢ndings at sonography often need helical CT for de¢nitive diagnosis. Indications for liver CT imaging include di¡erentiation of benign liver lesions [e.g., simple cysts, hemangiomas, adenomas, focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH)] from those that are malignant [e.g., metastasis, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), cholangiocarcinoma]. In the acutely ill patient, a suspected liver abscess or blunt abdominal trauma may well warrant CT examination. In transplant surgery, preoperative assessment of vascular anomalies and follow-up after surgery frequently requires CT.
