Title: Towards a Re-reading of the Dogmas of Vatican I
Abstract: The dogmas of Vatican I Council (1869–1870) on papal primacy and infallibility were formulated within a climate of angst; they should protect the church from the offenses of the modern world. Especially the popes of the nineteenth century regarded the search for freedom and autonomy as the root for the breakdown of the ancient order of the society and a widespread hostility against the church. It was a change of paradigm when Vatican II followed the principle of an “aggiornamento” and described the Church in its relation to the world and the challenges of the time. Nevertheless, the dogmas of 1870 reappeared almost unmodified in the decrees of Vatican II and the canon law of 1983. A re-evaluation of them in the light of Vatican II gives chances to synodal structures of the Church and to an ecumenical progress.
