Title: An Alternative Definition for Equivalence Relations
Abstract: It has become standard to define a relation of equivalence as a relation having the R.S.T. properties (reflexivity, symmetry, transitivity). There is an equivalent definition which is sometimes easier to use, and equally easy to remember. In essence, it is much older than the now standard definition, for it is derived from the axiom which Euclid quoted as Common Notion 1.
