The purpose of this study is to find the assumption or presuppositi...This study entitled An Analysis Of Presupposition In The Dialogues Of A “The Old Man and The Sea” Novel written by Ernest Hemingway. The purpose of this study is to find the assumption or presupposition of the conversations that found in the dialogues of the speaker to the listener in the novel. Afterward, to analyze this study the writer uses the presupposition theory based on Yule (1996) to determine and classify the data that have been collected from the presupposition of the conversation in the novel. Subsequently, the approach of this study is qualitative to support ideas of this study. Hence, based on the theory of Yule (1996) there are six types of presupposition and devided in Existential Presupposition, Factive Presupposition, Lexical Presupposition, Structural Presupposition, Non-Factive Presupposition, and Conter-factual Presupposition. Afterward, to collect the data, the writer read all of the dialogues in the novel of Ernest Hemingway. Based on the qualitative approach the writer classified and analyzed the data and the writer found 31 presuppositions and divided into 11 Existential Presupposition, 2 Factive Presupposition, 4 Lexical Presupposition, 6 Structural Presupposition, 4 Non-factive presupposition and 4 Counter-factual Presupposition. Based on the data analyzing the most presuppositions in the dialogue in the novel of Ernest Hemingway is Existential Presupposition.
