Title: The manufacturing sector in sub-Saharan Africa : an analysis based on firm surveys in seven countries
Abstract: The economies of sub-Saharan Africa have gone through major changes over the last three decades. The Regional Program on Enterprise Development (RPED) survey of the manufacturing sector in the first half of the 90s, which is the subject of detailed analyses in the subsequent sections, was an attempt to study the impact of the latest structural adjustment programs implemented in seven sub-Saharan countries namely, Cameroon, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. However, the geographical proximity of these countries does not insure a similar economic performance. In fact, the underlying fundamentals of these countries might be different enough to account for the different responses to the structural adjustment programs. Furthermore, the inherent differences in the macroeconomics of these sub-Saharan countries might very well be responsible for the differences that can be uncovered from the analysis of the microeconomic issues of manufacturing sector discussed in the following chapters. The authors begin, therefore, with an outline of the macroeconomics of these seven sub-Saharan countries. It might provide valuable background information that can assist us in interpreting the results of the survey data undertaken in the subsequent sections.
