Title: Challenges Faced by Site Management in the MalaysianConstruction Industry
Abstract: Site Management consists of a variety of activities that turn basic resources into a finished
product. Construction is known as the conversion of raw resource inputs into defined
functioning output by means of a managed process. Therefore, the construction site is
considered as a key area where the money is made or lost and where there is considerable
scope for improving efficiency, productivity and quality. Achieving good site
management on construction sites is inevitable. Hence, this paper presents research
findings on the challenges faced by site management in the Malaysian construction
industry. The study was conducted with reference to existing literature and the adoption
of a survey questionnaire distributed to 331 participants who are mainly involved in
construction site and employed by G7 contractor firms. The questionnaire survey
participants include site manager, site supervisor, safety officer and others. The
questionnaires were analysed through the use of descriptive statistics. In order to ascertain
the validity and reliability of the results, the study employs the Software Package for the
Social Sciences (SPSS). Findings emanating from the study showed that there are
management and administration problems, technical and engineering problems and poor
communication problems faced by the site management in the Malaysian construction
industry. The identified findings from the questionnaire analysis show that poor
communication problem is the most important challenges that caused by difference of
communication skill and lead to overrun of the completion date. The study findings
proved that standardisation in communication can improve the effectiveness of
construction site management by reducing poor communication problems in the
Malaysian construction industry.
