Abstract: The civil engineering industry continues to feel the effects of the recent economic downturn. This article describes the current state of the civil engineering industry and forecasts what the future may hold. Although design and construction markets related to environment, infrastructure and facilities shrunk in 2009, they should experience modest growth in 2011. Most design and construction firms took steps to maintain profitability in the face of declining revenues in 2009, including laying off staff and eliminating marginal businesses, offices and unprofitable clients. The transportation engineering market contracted by 2% in 2009. Transit design and construction were the strongest transportation segments in 2009. However, the highway and bridge engineering market contracted in 2009 for the first time in 10 years. The airport design market was flat in 2009, and the ports and harbors market also saw a slowdown in growth. The overall transportation market may decline slightly more in 2010, but the market could grow again in 2011, especially with the reauthorization of the federal surface transportation law.
