Substantia...The basal ganglia formed of several synaptically interconnected neurons in the subcortical anatomy plays an important role in controlling different characteristics of psychomotor behaviour. Substantia Nigra containing dopamine neurons helps the ganglia in communicating with striatum to transmit signals to the motor cortex. The basal ganglia are central to the pathophysiology of basic movement disorders controlling various body movements. They are associated with executive functions such as behaviour, motor learning, decision making and emotions. The motor movement in human being is performed through Direct and Indirect Pathway(s). The basal ganglion plays an important role, as it has the property to control the thalamus that performs and controls subsequent motor actions. The study of basal ganglia, its functions, structure, and role in movement disorders has been ongoing since the early 1980s.
