Title: Learning and Teaching in Harmony with the Brain
Abstract: Over the past 20 years neuroscience, biology, cognitive science and psychology have provided extraordinary insights into how the human brain takes in, processes and retrieves new information. These insights provide the foundation for the student-centered teaching process. This chapter is divided into three sections. Section one includes a brief history of the people and technology that were most responsible for developing a student-centered learning approach. Section two looks at much of the current research on learning including how students take in, process and recall information and the various factors that affect those processes. Section three looks at specific ways teachers can implement a student-centered approach based on research findings from neuroscience, biology, cognitive science and psychology. The key message of this chapter is that unless students can use the new learning we teach in meaningful ways when they need it, even years later, the hours spent in instruction end up being for naught.
