There are two classes of ribosomes in nature: the 80S ribosomes present in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells and the 70S ribosomes in prokaryotes. Ribosomes in chloroplasts and mitochondria are related to the prokaryotic ribosomes, although their sedimentation coefficients differ in many cases from 70S. Components The best known ribosome is that of the bacterium E. coli. It consists of two subunits of unequal size (30S and 50S). Besides three RNA molecules (5S, 16S and 23S) there are many ribosomal proteins. Their number was first determined by two-dimensional polyacrylamide electrophoresis.Read More
