Abstract: abbe 2015 (artists books brisbane event) was presented by the Griffith Centre for Creative Arts Research under the directorship and vision of Professor Ross Woodrow. The event included a conference, exhibitions, and artists book fair and visits to significant institutions and practitioners in the field across Brisbane
Platforms by which to mature the discourse on artists books are still relatively few. Currently three recognised academic journals and two biennial conferences actively supporting that discourse. PhD graduates from Australia and New Zealand represent a significant resource for the field and taking advantage of this, Tim Mosely, supported by the Griffith Centre for Creative Arts Research (GCCAR), initiated a biennial artists book conference with the expressed purpose of actively shaping the critical discourse within and around the field.
Mosely convened the first abbe (artists books Brisbane event) at QCA on the16,17 & 18 July 2015. The event attracted 74 attendees from the east coast of Australia, including 11 PhD graduates/candidates. The proceedings were shaped by Mosely’s research on the haptic and Monash PhD graduate’s Dr Lynn Ashby’s research on Post Literacy. The question underpinning abbe’s call for papers was the relationship between; artists books and “Post Literacy”, and artists books and “the haptic”. The proceedings consisted of 14 academic papers and 8 presentations all addressing the conference question to varying degrees. The conference was supported by an exhibition Books by Artists (23 artists working across the mediums and curated by Mosely), an artists book fair co-ordinated Mosely involving 22 selected exhibitors and a tour of sites of artists book research in Brisbane.
