To investigate the clinical value of intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) combined with breast conserving surgery (BCS) in early breast cancer.
Methods
The clinical data of 65 patients with early-stage breast cancer treated by BCS and IORT in the First Affiliated Hospital from October 2013 to August 2015 were retrospectively analyzed. And enrolled patients were divided into IORT group (34 patients, underwent BCS and IORT) and postoperative radiotherapy group (31 patients, underwent postoperative external beam radiotherapy). Incidence of local complications, recurrence condition, the cosmetic results of the two groups were observed and compared.
Results
The incidence of local complications in IORT group (5.9%) was higher than that in postoperative radiotherapy group (3.2%), but the difference was not statistically significant (P>0.05). The cosmetic result in IORT group was better than that in postoperative radiotherapy group (P<0.05). No one of the two groups had local recurrence or distant metastasis.
Conclusions
IORT has great short-term curative effect for patients with early breast cancer. And it is safe and reliable with less adverse reactions and better cosmetic outcomes, which has clinical application value.
