Title: The effects of hyperbaric oxygenation on serum MDA,SOD-1 and plasma ET of patients with head injury
Abstract: Objective The purpose of this paper was to observe the changes of malonic dialdehyde(MDA)metabolized from lipid peroxides(LPO)and superoxide dismutase(SOD-1)in serum and plasma endothelin(ET)of the patients with severe closed head injury before, during and after hyperbaric oxygenation(HBO) treatment. Methods Fifty patients were divided into two groups treated with and without HBO besides conventional treatment(HBO group and control group). There were another 30 healthy volunteers(healthy group)as normal controls.Activities of MDA were measured with spectrometry and ET and SOD-1 with radioimmunoassay. Results Before treatment there were no significant differences among the actvities of MDA,ET and SOD-1(P>0.05)in the two treatment groups, but there were significant differences where compared with the healthy group(P<0.01).There were negative correlations among MDA and ET with SOD-1 in the treatment groups. The outcome would be worse if the patients showed higher MDA and ET or lower SOD-1 after HBO treatment. There were lower MDA and ET and higher SOD-1 as well as better total treatment effect in HBO group than that in control group. Conclusions The changes of activites of MDA,ET and SOD-1 were related with the severity of brain injury and could predict the prognosis and outcome of HBO treatment of the patient and also could be an index for adjusting the scheme of HBO treatment.
