Title: Comparative study on characteristics of measles cases in 1998-2005 and 2006-2013 in Wenzhou
Abstract: Objective
To analyze the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of patients with measles in Wenzhou from 1998 to 2013, and provide available evidence for the prevention and control of the disease.
Methods
The clinical data of 2 783 hospitalized children with measles in Yuying Children's Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University from 1998 to 2013 were collected and analyzed, retrospectively. Comparative study on characteristics of measles cases in groupⅠ (1998-2005) and groupⅡ (2006-2013) .
Results
The incidence of measles occured every 3-4 years a peak. In group Ⅰ,the age of onset was typically more than 12-month-old, although 6 to <9 months as the peak age of onset in groupⅡ; the constituent ratio of rural and floating population in groupⅡ was higher than that in groupⅠ. The differences above had statisticel meanings (33.12% vs 14.95%, 41.26% vs 34.76%, χ2=124.03、12.48, P both<0.01) . In group Ⅱ, the incidence of measles with complicated pneumonia was significantly higher than the groupⅠ, but those with complicated laryngitis and encephalitis were significantly lower than the groupⅠ (59.37% vs 41.02%, 3.65% vs 6.85%, 6.86% vs 11.49%, P all<0.01) . In groupⅡ, the incidence of measles without complicated was lower than the groupⅠ (12.56% vs 23.20%, χ2=53.86, P<0.01) ,but the average length of stay in hospitals was longer than the groupⅠ[ (9.10±5.57) d: (8.21±4.68) d, t= -4.55, P<0.05].
Conclusions
During 1998 and 2005, the incidence of measles mainly focuses on children over 12 months, while during 2006 and 2013, it mostly concentrates on infants of 6-<9 months. The incidence has a younger-age trend. In the recent eight years, the coincidence of pneumonia complication is increased, while the coincidences of laryngitis and encephalitis are decreased.
