Title: Mode Selection in Cellular Underlay<scp>D2D</scp>
Abstract: Abstract Device‐to‐device (D2D) communication underlaid with cellular networks is a paradigm proposed to enhance the performance of cellular networks. The underlay D2D mode is especially helpful in improving the utilization of the scarce cellular spectrum and has been extensively studied in the literature. While effectively providing higher spectral efficiency, underlaid D2D communication with spectrum reuse can also cause nonnegligible interference that can lead to degradation in cellular performance. Hence, interference mitigation is a critical consideration in cellular underlay D2D communications. In this article, we provide a survey on mode selection in cellular underlay D2D communications and detail the performance improvements along with interference management strategies.
