Title: From troubling actions to troubled lives: sex offender registration and notification
Abstract: Society looks upon sex offenders with exclusionary disdain (Quinn, Forsyth,
and Mullen-Quinn 2004). Perhaps this explains why, over the past several
years, individuals convicted of sex offenses have been subjected to severe
sanctions. Efforts have been made to increase the supervision of these
criminals and decrease their opportunities to further perpetrate crimes.
Undoubtedly, many emerging laws and criminal justice policies in the United
States have targeted sex offenders, especially those convicted of victimizing
children. Criminal registration and community notification have become
hallmarks of American sex offender legislation. As a result, the community
presence and subsequent experiences of sex offenders have become a social
problem in its own right.
