Abstract: Bronchoalveolar Lavage is written by a pathologist (James Linder) and a pulmonologist (Stephen I. Rennard) who——by way of a case history format——share their experiences in bronchoalveolar lavage. They begin with a brief history of the development of bronchoalveolar lavage and discuss the clinical indications and methods used. A section dealing with handling and processing of lavage specimens, staining procedures, cultures, differential cell counts, and analysis of soluble substances in lavage fluid is included. Also provided in this section are reference values for both cellular and solute constituents the authors use at their institution.
