Abstract: Put simply, validity is the extent to which an instrument measures what it is meant to measure. Here, in the setting of health measurement, it is divided into content validity and construct validity. Content validity is the extent to which an instrument covers the concept of the latent construct (e.g., mobility, depression, physical functioning, self-esteem) that the instrument purports to measure. How well does the instrument capture all of the important aspects of health that we want to measure? The answer requires qualitative work as well as separate content studies with patients. Construct validity is the appropriateness of inferences made on the basis of observed and latent variables. Often factor analysis and other multivariate statistical methods are applied as analytical strategies to derive evidence to support construct validity.
