Abstract: Publisher Summary
This chapter presents the traditional approach to study trigonometry, which revolves about the measurement of triangles. It is possible to define the trigonometric functions as functions of angles rather than as functions of real numbers, and the two definitions are related in a simple manner. The chapter discusses a wide variety of applications that clearly demonstrate the usefulness of trigonometry in fields such as surveying and navigation. The chapter discusses the law of sines and the law of cosines, two important rules that can be employed when dealing with an oblique triangle, that is, a triangle that does not contain a right angle.
