Abstract: The evolution of biomedical waste management, organization and management of biomedical waste, characteristics, categorization, quantification, segregation, handling, and storage of biomedical waste are dealt within this chapter. Treatment, destruction and disposal of biomedical waste using technologies like incinerators, deep burial pits, autoclaves, sharp pits, shredders, etc. used for different categories of waste treatment and disposal are presented. The need for secured landfills and liquid waste disinfection is emphasized. Tools and equipment required for biomedical-waste management such as colored bins/bags for segregation of waste, needle cutters/burners for destroying needles and syringes, autoclaves, incinerators, sharp pits, protective aids, etc. are listed. A case study of a typical common biomedical waste treatment facility is presented. The legal provisions to date on biomedical waste management in India are mentioned.
