Title: Activated carbon improves effluent quality in refinery sludge process
Abstract: The addition of powdered activated carbon to the aeration tank of an activated-sludge plant was studied as a means of upgrading the quality of treated effluent without the additional cost of separate adsorption columns. Cost-effectiveness was observed as a consequence of operating the activated-sludge unit at high sludge age, enabling a low dose of activated carbon to be used. Pilot-scale experiments to test the effectiveness of the process using different forms of carbon at Amoco Oil Co.'s Texas City refinery are reported.
