Besides spodumene, micas with Li substitutions and metassomatic minerals containing this element, such as the relatively rare amphibole holmquistite, should be considered in lithium beneficiation processes and in metallurgical balance for the element. The samples with major Li content were identified, and their X-ray diffractometry data determined their mineral association, identifying the separation targets as spodumene, holmquistite, and mica. spodumene, identified the Li amphibole as ferroholmquistite, and the mica as muscovite. Images of the inclusions and mineral chemical compositions were obtained by SEM/EDS, except for Li which was quantified by LA-ICP-MS. Stoichiometry of the chemical data confirmed the Li pyroxene as pure spodumene, and the amphibole as between ferroholmquistite and holmquistite. The mica would be classified as muscovite with Fe-Li substitution, possibly an intermediary member of the substitution plan muscovite-trilithionite-annite, which can only be confirmed by a more detailed study. The amphibole contains relatively high Li content, around 1.8wt%, which shows the importance of characterizing less common lithium minerals.Read More
