Title: Components of Income Inequality Measures: The Case of Gini and Entropy Coefficients
Abstract: Income inequality measures include two types of divisible indicators: those divisible by subpopulations and those that are divisible by income source. Division into subpopulations makes it possible to divide total inequality between groups and within groups. Division by income source makes it possible to attribute to each factor of income (labor income, capital income, taxes, etc.) a share of the total inequality. This paper will both examine the way these two methods were designed and discuss the questions that they raise, particularly with regard to a convergence towards the simultaneous use of both methods.
