Sanctioned by the United Nations (UN) and chaired by Gro Harlem Brundtland, it provided an influential vision for the future of the world and humanity called sustainable development, that is, "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." A quarter-century on, despite a number of criticisms (see Meburatu, 1998), sustainable development remains a significant reminder of the contemporary challenges to humanity and biosphere. The current human use of natural resources on Earth will jeopardize future generations' ability to meet their needs if it continues at the current pace, and we need to make significant adjustments to the way of life with which we have become so accustomed.Read More
