Title: An act of resistance: lesbian women becoming parents
Abstract: Much has changed over the past decade with regard to the recognition of lesbian mother families in legislation and educational contexts, yet much also remains the same in regards to experiences of heteronormativity. This chapter explores how lesbian mothers speak about resisting heteronormativity, and how in so doing they reproduce particular ways of being that they in turn potentially pass onto their children. Specifically, the chapter explores how lesbian mothers engage in rights-based advocacy, how they seek to promote inclusion in schools, and how they engage with their own families of origin in ways that center their wellbeing and values as lesbian mothers. As a whole, the chapter suggests that lesbian mothers are impacted by normative gendered assumptions about parenting, but that also they must contend with heteronormative assumptions about lesbian parenting specifically.
