Abstract: Sociometric status types are an expression of the social status that a child or adolescent has in the peer group. Traditionally, sociometric status types have been assessed by asking children or adolescents to name whom they like most and whom they like least in their peer group. On this basis, youths are classified into one of five sociometric status types: accepted, rejected, neglected, controversial, and average. Sociometric status is associated with social behavior and with later developmental outcomes. In recent years, the traditional sociometric method was supplemented by asking youths to name whom they see as most popular and least popular.
