Abstract: Traffic crashes cause a lot of fatality and injuries every year. Robust and reliable driver monitoring system is an important step toward achieving higher vehicle autonomy level, as well as insuring the road safety and preventing road accidents. Driver states such as distraction and fatigue cause a decrease in driving performance. Hence, studies are being conducted in order to detect these states and to identify them. Different approaches are applied including physiological approach, behavioral approach, and vehicle-based approach. Each of these approaches rely on using different sensors and metrics. In this paper, we review the applied approaches in monitoring driver state and we briefly discuss their advantages and limits beside of their applications. Furthermore, we investigate the most studied driver states that lead to driving impairment.
