Abstract: THE student teacher is in transition from learning to teaching. Before dis missing this statement as obvious, consider its significance for improving the quality of education in the public schools. The best opportunity for interject ing innovation into teaching, and thereby improving instruction in the public schools, occurs during the preservice experience. That is when aspiring teachers are not fully socialized into the norms of the workplace and are more open to examining their attitudes and behaviors as educators. And just now, when the teaching force is about to be replaced in part and greatly augmented, it is more critical than ever to make sure that those impressionable student teachers in transition are equipped intellectually as well as practically for their new roles. One compelling new approach to teacher education involves creating programs for design professionals capable of self-reflection who can be seeded throughout the country as educational change agents and as models for the next generation of teachers.
