Title: Oblique Penetration of Metal Plates by 25MM APDS-T Projectile—Modeling and Verification
Abstract: An experimental and numerical research was performed to study the ballistic performance of metal plates subjected to oblique ballistic impact. Even though the oblique homogenous plates are not as weight effective as aluminum/steel and ceramics/steel combinations, they might be a part of effective passive or reactive armor combinations as well as elements of active armor solutions. A secondary objective was to generate verified experimental data for calibration of numerical models. The experiments were conducted using tungsten-alloy (WA) projectile 25mm X 137mm APDS-T. This WA core projectile has high strength and relatively high elongation. Therefore, it is very difficult to bend, break or shutter using oblique impact generating asymmetric forces. In order to find an effective mechanism that will defeat the projectile, it is necessary to develop numerical model that best describes the behavior of the projectile during penetration or perforation of several target plates. To produce such a model it is necessary to conduct ballistic experiments in order to calibrate the projectile’s material model and to model accurately the penetration process into metallic targets having high obliquity.
