Abstract: The human brain is terrible at quantifying risk. We like to frame things by importance and urgency, and it's the latter that really does us in. While we know it's not a great idea to jump onto a circular saw, we're still not great at smoking cessation, or good glycaemic control, or watching the ice caps melt until we're all under water and kind of... well, dead. It's the clear and present danger that grabs our attention and as a consequence we often don't recognise the most harmful behaviours for what they are. It's the insidious, often unnoticed, problems that'll get you.
