Title: Sediment Management Strategies – Case Study on Hydropower Reservoirs in Malaysia
Abstract: Excessive sediment inflow and its deposition severely affect reservoir storage capacity. When designing a reservoir, sufficient sediment storage capacity is considered so that sediment accumulation will not obstruct the functioning of the reservoir during the useful operational life of the project. The sediment deposition within the reservoir could lead to abrupt changes in the operation of the reservoir. It is important to estimate and monitor reservoir sedimentation rate and to select the appropriate sediment mitigation measures before the sedimentation affects or interfere with the functioning of the reservoir. This paper aims to provide some experiences in terms of sediment management strategies adopted for some major hydropower reservoir in Malaysia.
