Title: Fleming, Adaptation, and the Author Biopic
Abstract: In this chapter, the author looks to approach Fleming and the author biopic in terms of adaptation. An interesting phenomenon may be observed in respect of the relationship between adaptation and the biopic when available source texts have already been adapted to the screen. Given that author/character parallels had been a recurring feature of interpretations of and responses to Bond stories from the earliest phases of their existence, certainly predating the commencement of the novels' adaptation to the screen, it was all but inevitable that Fleming would also take that path. The principal narrative threads that run through the four episodes, namely Fleming's complicated relationship with Ann O'Neill and his wartime career with Naval Intelligence, form a structure around which the plethora of James Bond references are arrayed and invite consistent interpretation in terms of Fleming's identity formation as a writer and the genesis of 007.
