Title: Self-Destruction of German Archeology Under the Nazi Regime
Abstract: Nazism did not just pass over archeology like a gust in history: it almost carried it away in 1945. Since 1933 it had largely devoted itself to scratching the ground for the winner and it was caught out. The explanations that it had rallied the Nazi regime passively; that it had been used as propaganda, that there were individual and prestigious scientists won over to the Nazi cause don’t explain everything. The article’s aim is to show an unprecedented phenomenon in human history: “political-racial archeology” had perverted all of German archeology.
