Title: METROCARD: AUTOMATING NEW YORK CITY'S PUBLIC TRANSIT SYSTEM
Abstract: On January 6, 1994, New York City Transit introduced Automated Fare Collection to the largest transit system in the world. Known as MetroCard, this system of Automated Fare Collection has helped stabilize ridership and encouraged growth. The significant contributions to ridership growth are, in large measure, attributable to the strategies developed for the marketing and sales of MetroCard. A cornerstone of this initiative has been a multi-faceted out-of-system sales strategy. Out-of-system sales have been used to provide convenient, cost effective, customer-friendly distribution of MetroCards to the public.
