Title: Natural History and Medical Management of Waterfowl
Abstract: This chapter provides a brief summary of natural history of waterfowl and practical information on medical management, including the most prevalent concerns for each species and the epidemiology of infectious diseases. Waterfowl care starts with proper identification of orphans and adults. Waterfowl have several unifying features differentiating them from other groups of birds. A number of infectious diseases may result in large outbreaks in waterfowl species and because some may have important implications for domestic fowl, appropriate authorities should be contacted. Waterfowl may be impacted by a wide variety of natural and synthetic toxins. Approaches to treatment for common toxicities relevant to clinical practitioners are discussed. When evaluating waterfowl for release, they must be completely waterproof and able to recognize and obtain appropriate food items. Pre-release conditioning enclosures should be adequate for the given species to acquire food in a way that mimics the feeding challenges encountered in the wild.
