Abstract: The chapter provides an overview of the concepts and techniques used to study faults with numerical simulation. Following a description of the various numerical methods available for hydromechanical modelling of faults, including their pros and cons, the reader will learn which material properties of fault zone rocks are required to set up and run a numerical model. Subsequently, a generic fault zone model based on finite element techniques and various parameter studies is presented to illustrate the workflow and potential of numerical simulation of fault modelling.
