Title: 1.7 DISORDERED EATING SCREEN FOR ATHLETES (DESA-6): A PROPOSED SELF-REPORT BRIEF SCREENING TOOL FOR DISORDERED EATING IN ADOLESCENT ATHLETES
Abstract: The Disordered Eating Screen for Athletes (DESA-6) is a 6-item screening tool designed to identify athletes of both genders at risk for disordered eating (DE). This tool was previously tested in an adult athlete population of all genders, in all sports, and in all levels of competition with athletes ages 18 to 65 years and found to have acceptable specificity and sensitivity. The purpose of this study is to validate the DESA-6 for use in adolescent athletes of all genders in ages 12 to 19 years to evaluate risk for DE. A single brief screening tool applicable to the entirety of the athlete population would simplify the process of screening for DE, allowing early intervention and improved treatment outcome.
