The booklets, featuring story outlines, credits, song lyrics and somet...This is a set of freewheeling reflections on a collection of publicity booklets for Bengali films produced between 1932 and 1958. The booklets, featuring story outlines, credits, song lyrics and sometimes advertisements, constituted a supplementary experience to the films themselves. But as we revisit them from the distance of time, and see them without immediate reference to the films, they seem to create a world of their own; they become indices of visual culture as well as documents of transformation. They say something, albeit in fragments, about the changing value of stars, the shifting valence of authorship, emergence of the new popular form after the studio era, etc. This brief essay is an attempt to read such signs off the booklets.Read More
